Still, the warmth that engulfed Ethan moments ago remained, cloaking him with the man’s presence, leaving Ethan feeling safe, as if Aidan really had been inside this cabin--as if there was a certainty that he would be back.

From the moment Ethan had seen the mirage of Aidan outside, his exhaustion had gone away. Even though the fantasy had passed, Ethan didn’t feel the heaviness on his shoulders that seemed to rule much of his life these days. He knew it would return, but maybe if he closed his eyes and thought of Aidan again, he could keep it at bay, for a time.

Ethan thought about the pain in Aidan’s eyes when sharing the story of why he’d gone away, and a flicker of forgiveness tap tap tapped against his chest, requesting entry.

As he slid to the floor, Ethan just didn’t know if he could open himself up to that kind of potential heartache again and answer Aidan’s knock.

Chapter Seven

Aidan rapped his knuckles against the front door of the familiar house, praying like hell he had his information correct.

Christ, he didn’t want Ethan to know he was here.

The door swung open, and shock registered on Wyn’s rough-looking face. “Aidan. Hi.” Wyn glanced all around the darkness of the front yard beyond, as if he expected to find answers looming behind Aidan. “What can I do for you? Ahh, Ethan’s not here, if that’s who you’re looking for.”

“Nope. Umm...” Shit, I knew the woman; I have every right to be here. “I came to say hello to your mom, if that’s okay?”

Wyn’s dark eyes widened, but to his credit, he didn’t slam the door in Aidan’s face. Of course, he doesn’t know I walked away from his brother after planning a life together, either.

“Oh, well, I guess that would be fine,” Wyn answered. “She likes having visitors and she seems to be okay today.”

“I already told you once that I’m not deaf, son!” Jayne bellowed from inside the house. “Now let the boy in already!”

Wyn smiled and shook his head. “See? As I was about to tell you, before I was so rudely interrupted,” he turned his head and raised his voice, “she’s up for company tonight, and to go right in!” Wyn’s gaze suddenly narrowed in the direction of the driveway. “Why in the hell is your sister sitting in the truck?”

Aidan followed Wyn’s stare to Maddie, where she sat in the passenger seat of his vehicle. Maddie looked up, saw the men staring at her, and waved as she made a funny face. Aidan chuckled. His sister was something else. “She doesn’t really know your mother and she didn’t want to look like she was gawking or intruding. I just picked her up from work, and we’re going to eat afterward, so she said she would wait in the truck.”

“There’s no point in her sitting in the truck in the dark.” Wyn pushed past Aidan to the walkway. “You go on in and say hi. I’m sure you remember how to find the living room.
